Beyond earthly desires

It is amazing how, no matter how sweet and pleasing, all earthly desires and pursuits in the end only temporarily gratify, but do not completely satisfy. It is a drop of foggy water to a parched throat, serving only to further aggravate the unsatisfied and incumbent thirst the moment after it lands on the arid tongue. In the earthly sense, many a person can be successful and renown. Even esteemed and admired. But if you observe closely, the eyes are oft peaceless, the heart is restless, the mind agitated. There is hardly ever the quiet mind, radiant eyes, peaceful soul, and glowing heart. The undulating fountain of calm and warming light that encourages others to seek that quiet and virtuous island within themselves. The connectedness to all life has to offer, yet with sufficient detachment to cast a broader gaze upon the infinite.

Rarely have I seen this achieved. Most times, there is one-sidedness. Most people are persecuted and harassed by narrow goals, exhausted by the race, embroiled in the fierce storms of earthly joys and sorrows, flogged by the steel rod of human relationship conflicts, and scourged by the pitiless whips of passions and pleasures. But there is no real stillness, peace, and equanimity that is unperturbed by the howling of the winds. There is no solid foundation and iridescent light pervading the life.

I myself have yet to achieve this, but this is the goal. All exertions of clarifying concepts, pursuing ideals, and applying principles are really just ways of finding clues in the ocean of this life-journey. Clues that will best help me navigate this ocean of life in order to eventually reach the coveted goal: the island of universal peace and equilibrium, where the golden Sun of radiant joy forever shines and never sets.
